Our November 12th meeting has been cancelled due to the Nor'Easter! We hope to see you at our December meeting.
UPCOMING MEETING:
Our meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at Beach Fellowship, 1817 General Booth Blvd., in Virginia Beach. Our next meeting will be held on Thursday, December 10th. We meet with other families facing the same issues and play games, relax, and talk. It is an informative meeting but also a chance to meet true peers. Please join us!
WHAT IS SPINA BIFIDA?
Spina Bifida (spy-nah bi-fi-duh) is a neural tube defect that occurs early in the unborn child's development. One or more of the spinal vertebrae fails to close completely and leaves an opening in the spine.
CAUSES
The exact causes of spina bifida are still unknown. Research studies have shown that spina bifida may be caused by an unknown environmental agent interacting with genetic factors.
PREVENTION
Studies have shown that folic acid plays a key factor in the incidence of neural tube defects. The national Spina Bifida Association recommends "Women who are old enough to have babies should take folic acid before and during the first three months of pregnancy. Because half of the pregnancies in the United States are unplanned, the Spina Bifida Association asks women to take a vitamin with 400 mcg (0.4 mg) of folic acid each day during the years of their lives when they are possibly able to have children. Women who have a child or sibling with Spina Bifida, have had an affected pregnancy or have Spina Bifida themselves should take 4000 mcg (4.0 mg) of folic acid for one to three months before and during the first three months of pregnancy."
OUR GOALS
- To provide emotional support, information, advocacy, and financial assitance to individuals born with spina bifida and their families;
- To increase public awareness and understanding of spina bifida;
- To work together with other organizations which share our goals of improving care and treatment of persons born with spina bifida;
- To promote research into the cause, improved treatment, and prevention of spina bifida.
